BORGO SAVAIAN

Generations rooted in Cormòns

The Bastiani family's village is shaped by the rhythm of nature and local events. Each member upholds a tradition passed down through generations, reflecting the village’s spirit and a deep commitment to crafting Borgo Savaian wines with care.

Their story began with Bruno Bastiani, whose dedication and knowledge of Cormòns and Collio soils laid the foundation. In the 1970s, his son Mario and Mario’s partner Marinella guided the winery forward, producing the first Borgo Savaian bottles. Today, grandchildren Stefano and Rosanna, joined by Stefano’s wife Valentina, carry on the legacy. They blend tradition with fresh ideas, always seeking to improve quality in the vineyard and cellar.

Borgo Savaian lies in a prime wine-growing area with 27.5 hectares of vineyards by Monte Quarin, where local grape varieties are central to the Bastiani family's work. The Collio soil, called ponca, mixes with the gravel of the Friulian plain to create a unique ground. This gives their wines their special character, with strong aromas in the whites and depth and body in the reds aged in oak barrels. The Bastiani family's focus on quality starts in the vineyards, which they tend with great care.

By harnessing the inherent power of the soil while intentionally shifting the focus toward freshness, vibrant aromas, and the pure expression of the fruit, Borgo Savaian aims to keep the alcohol in balance. For nearly 25 years, their vineyards have been farmed using only organic principles (copper and sulfur), with the official organic certification arriving with the upcoming harvest. They use only estate-selected yeasts, naturally authorized by organic protocols. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel, followed by aging in stainless steel with selected yeasts for the white wines until March. Weekly batonage is performed. For the red wines, aging takes place in wood for 12 months, in 225-liter French oak barriques.

The family uses the cappuccina and guyot systems and practices dry trimming and green pruning to produce and harvest high-quality grapes. Their careful work preserves and enhances the flavors of their wines from vineyard to bottle.
