CANTINA BOZEN

Italy’s first and foremost CasaClima* winery-

Kellerei Bozen represents the best of both worlds in South Tyrol, combining the growing traditions of over 224 growers from 350 hectares of Bolzano’s finest vineyards. The region’s largest co-op, Kellerei Bozen, its moniker in the regional German tongue, merged some of the region’s oldest indigenous varietal producers in 2001, bringing in prized plots to their already impressive collection of vineyard sites spread throughout Bolzano. The winemakers behind the Kellerei Bozen label themselves “young and full of vision for the future.” By blending the traditions of this intriguing region with the innovative spirit of this youthful group, we can expect nothing but greatness from this already distinguished winery.

The Bozen wine cooperative is the joint venture of two historical wineries in Bolzano, each bringing a different focus and specialty to the collaboration. The Gries Winery, founded in 1908, set out to produce red wine with the Lagrein grape, a native variety of the Gries region. The St. Magdalena Winery, founded in 1930, began as a cooperative intent on making St. Magdalener, a red wine made from the Vernatsch grape. In 2001, they became Cantina Produttori Bolzano, the youngest cooperative winery in South Tyrol.ly select only the best-

Kellerei Bozen sources fruit from 350 hectares of Bolzano’s best vineyards between 240 and 800 meters above sea level. Vineyards in the undulating valley floor are characterized by deep, alluvial, warm, and well-aerated soils, while soils in the sun-drenched hillsides are light and sandy. The grapes that go into St. Magdalener are sourced from the loose, sandy soil on the warm slopes at the foot of the Renon, from the hamlets of Santa Maddalena, Santa Giustina, and Coste. Lagrein grapes are grown on the porous, warm soils of Gries and S. Maurizio. Vineyards at San Giorgio, Guncina, Settequerce, San Maurizio, and Missiano also lie within the production area. The enormous diversity of soils and microclimates enables them to produce a wide range of wines, each grown under ideal conditions. They employ green cultivation methods and rigorous selection of only the best quality, healthiest grapes at harvest time. They maintain three lines of wines- Classic, Election, and Riserva.

If you are not drinking mountain Pinot Grigio… what are you doing?

This mountain Pinot Grigio is bright, full of snappy acidity, and alluring minerality. The dazzling golden wine has a rather robust body for a Pinot Grigio. You will fall in love with the aromatics: white flowers, lovely tones of citrus peel, apple skins, and crisp pear—serenity in a glass.

Pair it with a fresh fennel and orange salad at lunch. Invite a friend over for dinner — toss together a marinated squid salad, grill some sea bass, and a side of farfalle with lemon and garlic.

    Unoaked, clean, fresh Chardonnay

Dry and warm soils contribute to the delicate ripeness of this elegant Chardonnay. With vineyard sites ranging from 250-500 meters in elevation, the grapes see just enough warmth and sunlight to develop an even balance of acidity and fruit.

Gently pressed and stainless steel fermented, this fresh bottling exhibits tropical fruit aromatics and a flinty, mineral-driven core that carries through to the finish. With acid, mineral, and fruit coming together in perfect harmony, this wine can be enjoyed for simple light dish pairings or for serious swirling.

    Light note of nutmeg, aromatic,

Kerner (Est. 1929 Trollinger x Riesling)

The grape Kerner is a hybrid of Trollinger/Schiava and Riesling; it was first cultivated at the viticulture school of Weinsberg, Germany, in 1930. The vines thrive on the light, gravelly, and sandy soils of the Isarco River Valley. Steep slopes, abundant sunshine, and cool nighttime temperatures form the local and highly beneficial microclimate. Bolzano is known to have the highest highs and the lowest lows of any city in Italy. The white wine grapes are from various vineyards, and they are gently pressed at the winery, where extreme care is taken to keep the whole clusters. Ripening and fermentation take place in stainless steel vats to preserve the wine's freshness and crispness. In the glass, this is a straw-yellow wine with green reflections. Bolzano Kerner has an intensely aromatic nose, with notes of peach, apricot, and mandarin. Pure, mineral-rich Kerner shines on the palate, offering a brilliantly juicy profile with crisp acidity. While Kerner can stand up to meals, traditionally it is used with light appetizers, cold cuts, mushroom dishes, freshwater fish, steamed seafood, or as an aperitif.

MY ANCESTORS WOULD BE SURPRISED. Our farm is ancient. It’s mentioned in old documents dated 1275. Things were quite different in those days: Our ancestors had to fight, fight and fight again against all the challenges of nature. As a young wine grower, my father had to carry the soil back up the hill every spring that the rain had washed down in the course of the year. Today, there’s vegetation cover in our vineyards. That helps prevent erosion and is good for the bees at the same time. We sow yellow mustard, oats, and clover. Being a wine grower is not just a job like any other. You have to love nature and have a passion for tradition. If my ancestors could see me today on the vineyard tractor, they’d be surprised and delighted. -Armin Platter.

Kellerei Bozen has been producing Sauvignon Mock as a varietal wine since 1987. Mock, the single vineyard is more than 600 years old and produces deliciously tart and elegant wine of the most sparkling, clear citrine tourmaline color. The nose is characterized by grassy notes, playful herbs, citrus fruit, and earthy pears. This is a persistent wine, with elegant, active acidity, powerful though restrained, with nutty bread and minerals at the finish.

This wine is the product of an ideal combination of grape variety, soil, and microclimate. Selected grapes from the best sites produce expressive, authentic, and complex wines. The Sauvignon Mock integrates vegetal, floral, and fruity notes, combining crisp acidity with a flavorsome taste. Enjoy Mock with a snack of fresh goat’s cheese and smoked salmon pâté, accompanied by crusty local bread. Vegetarian dishes, salads, or even a hot asparagus & cheese tart. With a life of 5 years, there are many pairings to try.

    Crisp - Fresh - Dry

Introduced to Alto Adige by Archduke John of Austria in the 19th century, Riesling is one of the most elegant and refined white wines. In contrast to their German forebears, Rieslings in Alto Adige are typically fermented dry, meaning they have a lower R/S ratio.

Traminer, aka. Gewurztraminer was a familiar wine in German-speaking areas as far back as the 13th century. Today, this aromatic wine is one of the most popular in Alto Adige. As the name indicates, the Gewürztraminer originates from the Alto Adige village of Termeno (Tramin in German). The grapes, harvested from select sites, produce a wine that is intensely fruity and full-flavored, with a zesty opulence.

The Pinot Nero of Bachman Riserva has been native to South Tyrol for over 100 years.  The fertile soils of Renon, above Bolzano, are home to the pinot nero grapes used in this riserva bottling. High altitudes and climatic shifts help bring these grapes to optimum ripeness, where they develop excellent complexity and concentration.

Fresh fruit and a lovely, brambly quality precede spicy notes of cinnamon, clove, and tobacco, coming together harmoniously for a bottling full of intrigue and delight. The wine spends time in used French barrique as well as in bottle before leaving the winery: the result is a finely tuned and unique pinot that is sure to capture the attention of all who try it.

Lagrein, one of the most typical red wine varieties of South Tyrol and the Bolzano Winery, thrives in the valley floor around Bolzano, where temperature differences between day and night are significant. The very old vines produce a wine of high quality, with concentrated yet velvety tannins, juicy fruit, and a robust body.

Lagrein thrives here, and Kellerei Bozen produces this bottling from only the finest and oldest vines. The grapes are concentrated, dense, and powerful due to the stark climatic differences between day and night.

Taber is a wine with an impressive tannic structure cushioned by lush, chocolatey, and supple qualities. Fully ripe black cherries and floral notes define the nose of this wine, while an earthy and rugged tannin gives musculature and intensity to the palate. Supported by 12 months in a one or two-year-old French Barrique.
